GOVERNMENT REGULATION OF RAILROADS

GOVERNMENT REGULATION OF RAILROADS

Government Regulation of Railroads, regulation by state and federal governments of the rates, service, operation, finance, construction and abandonment, and consolidation of railroads in the United States. See also Railroads.

The federal government has been regulating the railroad industry since 1887 when the Interstate Commerce Act was passed. In 1970 United States Congress created the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak), which took over operation of most intercity passenger trains. This railroad yard serves the city of Hutchinson, Kansas, a center in the American Midwest for the trade and shipping of wheat.
